New Ways of Grappling with the Nitrogen Cycle: Insights from North America

About this session: This session will present a new conceptual framing of how nitrogen (N) cascades across the environment, coupling economic and ecosystem models to evaluate management scenarios for reducing nitrogen impacts. It will also provide an overview of an integrated research project developing an environmental surveillance system to monitor and understand nitrogen dynamics across the Mississippi River-Gulf of Mexico land-ocean continuum, particularly in response to extreme climate events. In addition, the session will offer an update on efforts to expand nitrogen management beyond the farm by developing alternative policy and governance levers that improve nitrogen use efficiency across multiple sectors, targeting upstream supply chains and international legal frameworks rather than relying solely on voluntary farmer practices.
