The Road to COP: Beyond the UNFCCC: Nitrogen, N₂O, and the Multilateral Architecture for Climate Action

About this session: Nitrous oxide (N₂O) — the third most significant greenhouse gas and a major driver of stratospheric ozone depletion — sits at the intersection of multiple global governance regimes. Yet action on nitrogen pollution and N₂O emissions remains fragmented across treaty bodies that rarely speak to each other.

This webinar brings together practitioners from five multilateral processes to map the landscape of parallel climate opportunities: from the UNFCCC and the Montreal Protocol’s Kigali Amendment to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP), and the UNEP Working Group on Sustainable Nitrogen Management. Speakers will assess where each framework currently stands on nitrogen and N₂O, identify gaps and synergies, and explore how a more coordinated multilateral approach could accelerate mitigation.

The session aims to equip climate negotiators, policymakers, and civil society practitioners with a cross-cutting view of the institutional landscape ahead of COP.
