Policy Fellows - Call for Applications
We are excited to announce an open call for applications to join the International Nitrogen Network (iN-Net) Policy Fellowship Program.
The Fellowship Program is part of iN-Net (www.in-net.network), a U.S. National Science Foundation-funded project devoted to stimulating pathbreaking, policy-relevant research that can underpin national action plans to halve nitrogen waste by 2030. The project is a collaboration with a number of global science and policy networks.
The iN-Net Policy Fellowship Program will be managed by Edin Thornton (International Nitrogen Initiative (INI) and Thornton Peak). The Policy Fellows will collaborate with iN-Net’s three policy-focused partner networks: the UNEP Nitrogen Working Group (NWG), the Taskforce on Reactive Nitrogen (TFRN), and the Global Partnership on Nutrient Management (GPNM). Each Policy Fellow will be individually assigned to work with one of these key policy partners for a one-year term, engaging in policy-relevant activities that contribute directly to the partner networks’ nitrogen agendas.
Role of a Policy Fellow
Policy Fellows will work closely with their assigned policy partner and iN-Net leadership to:
Conduct policy research and develop strategies for nitrogen governance.
Contribute to the design and implementation of policy-relevant projects.
Produce high-impact outputs such as policy briefs, white papers, and reports.
Engage with stakeholders through expert meetings, workshops, and presentations.
Support the synthesis of nitrogen policy data to inform decision-making.
Collaborate with working groups to integrate findings into broader nitrogen governance initiatives.
Fellowship Structure, Outcomes, and Support
Project Development
Each Policy Fellow will undertake a targeted project with a partner network. These projects will be developed in consultation with iN-Net leadership and will include clearly defined goals, timelines, and deliverables.
Expected Outcomes
Fellows will produce high-impact outputs, which may include:
A publishable paper.
A white paper, policy brief, or report to be featured on the iN-Net website.
Additional deliverables requested by the sponsoring organization, such as datasets, summary reports, or legislative recommendations.
Deliverables and deadlines will be coordinated and adapted throughout the fellowship to ensure alignment with evolving project needs, the Fellow’s career goals, and the Host's policy priorities.
Mentorship and Guidance
Each sponsoring organization will assign a liaison to supervise and guide the Fellow’s work.
Fellows and hosts will have ongoing support from the Policy Fellows Manager and iN-Net team throughout the placement.
Opportunities to connect with our robust network of similarly-interested professionals, spanning academia, civil society, government, and research institutions.
Fellowship Benefits
Fellows will receive:
A $1,000 honorarium at the outset of the term
Mentorship opportunities from both the sponsoring organization and broader iN-Net community
Sponsorship to attend the annual iN-Net in-person workshop
This program offers Fellows a chance to gain hands-on experience in policy and research while contributing to meaningful, strategic interventions on global nitrogen issues.
